Every June our diocese gathers its clergy and lay delegates to pray, take counsel, and look at the year ahead. This year the Diocese of the Missouri Valley held its forty-fourth synod — three days of worship and work at St. John’s Cathedral.
St. Luke’s is one small parish in Colorado Springs. But we are not alone — here is some of what our wider church family has been up to.
The diocese is growing. Several new mission stations were welcomed this year (in Minnesota, Iowa, Illinois, and Missouri), each a place where, not long ago, there was no traditional Anglican worship, and now there is. New clergy were introduced, and men preparing for Holy Orders were presented.
A single, remarkably generous gift was also received, given specifically for growth, evangelism, and mission. A gift like that is, before anything else, a responsibility — and the diocese asks your prayers that it bear much fruit.
We are making friends, too. Our bishop and clergy continue in warm theological conversation with the Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod, and this year began early talks with the Armenian Apostolic Church, an ancient communion of the Christian East. And the gospel goes out: from outreach among the Lakota of the northern plains to mission work reaching as far as Indonesia.
The synod also marked the founding of the Knights of Saint Michael and Saint George — a new brotherhood that forms Christian men through service to the Church, defense of the faith, and care for their neighbors. Any man who would like to know more is warmly invited to speak with us.
